Does Fiberglass Rebar Meet Code? ACI 440.11-22 and ASTM D7957 in Plain English

August 2026 · Pultrax LLC, Yuma, Arizona

The short answer: yes — GFRP reinforcement has both a material specification and a full building code, and US departments of transportation have been building bridges with it for years. Here's what each document does, in plain English.

ASTM D7957: what the bar has to be

ASTM D7957, "Standard Specification for Solid Round Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer Bars for Concrete Reinforcement," is the material spec. It sets minimum guaranteed tensile strength by bar size, minimum modulus, fiber content, moisture absorption limits, and alkaline-resistance requirements — plus the QC testing that proves a production lot meets them. When a bar is "manufactured to D7957," that's the sheet of guarantees your engineer designs against. Pultrax bar is manufactured to this specification, with lot-tied test results.

ACI 440.11-22: how to design with it

ACI 440.11-22 is the "Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete Reinforced with Glass Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) Bars" — deliberately organized to mirror ACI 318, the concrete code every structural engineer already uses. It covers flexure, shear, development length, serviceability, and detailing for GFRP-reinforced members. An engineer who designs with ACI 318 can design with 440.11; the material properties come from the D7957 datasheet.

What to tell the building department

For permitted work, the conversation is: the design is by a licensed engineer under ACI 440.11-22, the material is specified to ASTM D7957, and the manufacturer supplies the datasheet and certificates. For residential flatwork and slab-on-grade, GFRP is commonly accepted under the IRC — check with your building department, as adoption varies by jurisdiction.

What we won't claim

You'll notice we don't advertise code approvals we don't hold, and nothing on this site is engineering advice — your design professional and your building department make the project decisions. What we supply is bar made to the spec, the paper trail with every lot, and the product data to design against.
